From this Track through to number 5, there is an expectation that the group taking part will go a little further, in terms of effort to reach a learning site and taking responsibility for exploring and studying more independently.
Track 3 is all about the chemistry of mining, and – as the pictures show – should deal with use of water (Streaming & Processing), Fire (for Fire Setting and Smelting) and the PH adjustments plus other elements of biological, chemical and electrical processes being developed by the mining industry today.
3a) Streaming research and Story Telling can easily be undertaken independently if the right site is located. It should have a good flow of clean water all year round, with safe, solid yet easily accessible banks – not too high. The Perranwell option shown below – with a small ‘beach area’ – would be perfect, but we also can recommend locations in Marke Valley near Upton Cross, Danescombe Valley near Cotehele and in the ‘Secret Forest’ at The Meadow Barns, Centre. Unfortunately each of these would require a considerable distance of walk carrying gear, from the nearest station, but bus connections are available so why not explore that option?
The group should bring their own trowel and plastic tray or sieve and small bags for samples, plus a camera and notebook to record what they find. We always also bring a large St Piran teddy bear, for the story time!

If you send an email to enquiry@themeadowbarns.co.uk Caroline will help you to schedule a visit and/or receive the information pack and assessment card.

3b) The 2nd part of Track 3 is about Smelting, Cooking and use of acids. The metals and food come together when tins of soup, beans or spaghetti are baked in the fire, for lunch. This activity involves much more specialised knowledge than streaming, along with quite a bit of equipment. Supervision by an experienced leader for outdoor fire e.g. a Forest School practitioner, is required, please do not attempt it without such an adult in charge.

We have 2 Training events during the week of August 10th for suitably experienced Fire Leaders and volunteers helping. The first is on Monday 10th from tea time into early evening at The Meadow Barns Centre and the 2nd on Friday 14th from 11 to 2 ish at a Secret Location near Albaston, in the Tamar Valley.
