Track 2 Rocks, Ores and Metals

Across Cornwall and West Devon, one of the most important things that we need to study in depth for, a greener future, is the metal mining history. This is not history for its own sake but because – up the road about 10 miles – is an exciting renewal project, which has begun to explore and discover a range of very important metals, all of which are vital for modern life.

For use in our digital devices they have found tin, copper and silver. And … for the unfortunately grim necessity of modern warfare, their most recent reports describe enough quantity of high-grade tungsten to operate profitable mining for almost 30 years!

It is a pleasure to share that the team at Tamar Valley Centre, a short walk from Gunnislake Station, is working with Learning Tracks staff to offer the Track 2 Treasure Hunt activity. It begins as a free training day, on Monday 3rd August, for suitable adults who may also bring a teenage assistant. Having run through the activity at least once on the day, hopefully enough people will volunteer to be Guardians!

We envisage the scheme operating with an online booking enquiry system, and confirmation from the volunteers of a date, when one person can be available to hand over the information bag and be at the centre for a couple of hours. The small group should be able to explore and find their treasure without help, but it’s just important to have a responsible adult with local knowledge on hand.
